Banff is one of those places I keep returning to. Not because I have done it all, but because every visit brings a different kind of joy. Sometimes it is the season, other times it is the company, or simply the need to step away and breathe. Whatever the reason, Banff always seems to deliver something special.
Over time, Banff has been the backdrop for some really lovely moments for me. From cozy birthday escapes and winter sleigh rides to scenic boat cruises and quiet walks, each visit has left me with memories I truly enjoyed and would happily repeat.
So if you are planning a birthday treat, looking for a calm day trip, or simply want a peaceful mountain escape, here are five fun things I have personally done in Banff that might inspire your own visit.
🏨 Where to Stay in Banff

If you’re planning a special trip to Banff, choosing the right place to stay can really shape the experience especially for birthdays, winter escapes, or slower-paced visits. From cozy hotels in town to iconic mountain properties, there are plenty of options depending on the kind of trip you’re planning.
I’ve been on the Banff Gondola a couple of times now, and I’d happily go again. Whether you’re going for the first time or the fifth, there’s just something about the ride up and the views at the top that makes it feel brand new each time.
My first visit was in early fall, and the colours were stunning. I’ve also done it in winter and most recently during a warmer season with my sister. We took our time, enjoyed the boardwalk at the top, and soaked in the view of the mountains from every angle. It’s easy, scenic, and you don’t have to hike to enjoy the beauty of Banff from above.
I’ve also shared more details about one of our winter visits in this post about our family road trip to Banff, where the gondola was the main highlight.
One of my favourite birthday experiences was a winter visit to Banff, where we combined the gondola with a horse-drawn sleigh ride. It was just my husband and me, and honestly, it felt like something out of a movie.
Snow was falling softly, we were wrapped in blankets, and it was one of the most peaceful birthday moments I’ve ever had. If you’re visiting Banff during the winter months and want something romantic and relaxing, I’d definitely recommend this combo.
💆🏾♀️ Spa Day at the Fairmont Banff Springs
I don’t know about you, but sometimes all I want for my birthday is to do absolutely nothing except be pampered. And that’s exactly what happened on one of my birthday escapes with my husband. We didn’t stay overnight at the Fairmont Banff Springs, but we spent the day there enjoying the spa, eating out, and just taking things slow.
It felt luxurious without needing to be a big production. Whether you go for the full treatment or just want to relax and take in the views from the spa area, this was one of those “yes, I needed this” kind of days.
Lake Minnewanka was one of those spots that had been on my Banff list for a while, and when we finally did the boat cruise, it didn’t disappoint. It was scenic, peaceful, and just the right length of time to sit back, relax and enjoy being on the water.
We listened to fun facts from the guide, took photos, and admired how calm everything felt around us. It’s a lovely option if you’re looking for a low-key way to enjoy the outdoors, especially if you’re going with kids or someone who prefers a more relaxed pace.
We did this one as a family, and it was such a lovely way to enjoy nature without too much effort. Johnston Canyon is one of those trails that is popular for a reason. It’s easy to walk, has built-in viewpoints and the waterfalls along the way are a bonus.
It’s very doable for kids and doesn’t require special gear or experience. You just walk, take your time, stop for photos, and enjoy the moment. I’ve already written about this one in a separate post if you’d like a deeper look, but it’s one of my go-to recommendations for something beautiful and beginner-friendly.
🎟️ Banff Experiences Worth Booking Ahead

Some Banff experiences, like the gondola, sleigh rides, spa days, and lake cruises, are worth planning ahead especially during peak seasons or for special occasions.
Each of these moments came from a different season or reason — a birthday, a quiet sister day trip, or a much-needed couple’s escape. I haven’t done it all in Banff, but the things I have done made me slow down, breathe deeper, and feel refreshed. And honestly, that’s what makes Banff special.
If you’re making a full day of it, you might also enjoy spending time in nearby Canmore, I shared how we explored the area as a family in this post.
If there’s something you’ve done in Banff that you absolutely loved, feel free to share it with me. I’m always up for adding more little moments to my memory bank.
