We've explored quite a few indoor attractions as a family, from science and museums to indoor playgrounds, and I love having a few of these ideas saved for days when we need to get out of the house but being outside isn't really an option.

So if the kids need somewhere to burn off some energy, you want something educational, or you just need an easy family outing, here are some of our indoor favourites and a few more places to check out around Calgary

There are interactive exhibits, live science demonstrations, and the Infinity Dome, plus the Creative Kids Museum for younger children. The Creative Kids Museum is designed specifically for kids up to age eight, with plenty of hands-on opportunities to build, climb, and explore.

We've visited as a family, and I like that it isn't just somewhere for the kids to run around. There's actually a lot for them to discover along the way.

Good for: Learning + play, younger kids, full family outings

Not every indoor outing needs to cost money.

The Central Library is one of my favourite easy options when we want to get out without planning a huge activity.

The children's library alone is 12,200 square feet and includes spaces for younger children as well as the Questionarium for school-aged kids.

You can browse books, spend some time in the children's area, and explore the building itself.

And because it's free, you don't have to feel like you need to stay all day to get your money's worth. 😂

Good for: Free family outings, quieter days, younger and school-aged kids

If the kids need somewhere indoors but you don't necessarily want an indoor playground, Devonian Gardens is another easy option.

Located inside The CORE Shopping Centre, the indoor garden has tropical plants, fountains, fish ponds, walking areas, and a playground.

It's one of those places you can combine with another downtown stop rather than making it the entire day's activity.

Good for: Free outings, younger kids, slower family days

For a day when the kids really need to burn some energy, an indoor playground is usually a safe bet.

We've visited Luv 2 Play, which has a multi-level play structure, areas for different ages, and an arcade.

This is more of a proper play day than a quick stop, so I'd choose this when the goal is basically:

Let the kids play until they're tired. 😂

Good for: Active play, younger kids, cold or rainy days

Cloud Land is another indoor playground we've experienced, but it feels a little different from the traditional giant-play-structure setup.

It combines physical play with interactive digital experiences, including games that respond to movement and touch.

If your kids enjoy technology as much as climbing and playing, this can be a fun change from a regular indoor playground.

Good for: Younger kids, interactive play, something a little different

If you're looking specifically for a big indoor playground, KidzGo is another option to consider.

It has large climbing and play structures as well as separate areas for different ages, including younger children.

This would be another one I'd put in the "we need to get these kids out of the house and moving" category. 😂

Good for: High-energy play, toddlers through bigger kids

The Big Box is more of a full family entertainment centre than a basic indoor playground.

The North location includes a large soft-play structure and inflatable area, plus additional attractions such as bumper cars, an arcade and an aerial obstacle course.

Because there are several types of activities in one place, this could be useful if you're trying to entertain kids of different ages.

Good for: Active kids, siblings of different ages, longer outings

Flying Squirrel Trampoline Park North Calgary

Sometimes climbing through an indoor playground isn't enough, and the kids need to jump. 😂

Flying Squirrel has trampolines along with other activities and an arcade.

I'd put this one on the list for families looking for something more active, particularly with kids who have a lot of energy to burn.

Good for: Active kids, jumping, high-energy outings

This one stood out during my research because it's designed around inclusive and sensory-friendly play.

The gym welcomes children of different abilities and combines movement with sensory and fine-motor activities.

I haven't personally visited this one, so I'm putting it here as an option to look into rather than giving you a personal review.

Good for: Inclusive play, sensory-friendly activities, younger kids

Activate combines physical activity with interactive gaming. Instead of sitting in front of a screen, you're actually moving through game rooms and completing different challenges.

This could be a good one to save as your kids get older or if you're looking for something the adults can participate in too.

Good for: Older kids, families who like games, active outings

Museums are another easy option that sometimes get forgotten when we're trying to think of something to do with kids.

Calgary has several that can work well for families, including The Hangar Flight Museum, where kids can see aircraft and learn about aviation. Tourism Calgary also includes museums among its recommended indoor family attractions.

We've visited The Hangar as a family, and I especially like museum days when we want an outing that mixes exploring with learning.

Good for: Curious kids, quieter days, learning through exploring

Okay, hear me out. 😂

The Calgary Zoo obviously isn't an indoor attraction, but you don't have to spend the entire visit outside.

There are indoor animal habitats and other sheltered spaces throughout the zoo, so depending on the weather, you can plan your visit around a mix of indoor and outdoor areas.

I wouldn't choose this during truly awful weather, but for those "Should we still go?" kind of days, it's worth remembering that you aren't necessarily outside the entire time.

Not every family outing needs admission tickets.

If you're trying to keep the day inexpensive, I'd start with:

• Calgary Central Library
• Your neighbourhood Calgary Public Library
• Devonian Gardens
• Free library programs
• Indoor community events when available

You can also check current calendars before heading out because free programs and special events change throughout the year.

If you have younger kids, I'd lean toward places where they can explore at their own pace, like the library, TELUS Spark's Creative Kids Museum or one of Calgary's indoor playgrounds.

For school-aged kids, science centres, museums, trampoline parks, and larger play centres give you more options.

And as kids get older, activities like Activate can make indoor family outings feel less like you're taking them to a "kids' place" and more like something everyone can actually do together.

That's one reason I don't think families necessarily outgrow indoor adventures. You just start choosing different ones.

Calgary weather has a way of changing plans, but staying indoors doesn't have to mean staying home.

Sometimes we want somewhere educational. Sometimes the kids just need to run, jump, and climb. And sometimes I want an outing that requires almost no planning at all.

That's why I like having a mix of options saved.
