One thing I've learned is that you don't need to spend a ton to have fun with kids, especially in a city like Calgary.

Over time, we've built up a list of free places and activities that have become our go-to options for days when we just want to get outside, burn some energy, and make a few memories without planning an expensive family outing.

Some are places we've visited again and again, while others are easy ideas you can keep in your back pocket for those "What should we do today?" kind of days.

Whether you're looking for parks, indoor activities, or somewhere worth the short drive outside the city, here are some free things to do in and around Calgary with kids.

Just across the river from Bowness Park is Baker Park, another one of our favourites.

It has beautiful gardens, open lawns and pathways that are perfect for walking or biking.

We've visited when we just wanted somewhere quiet to spend some time outside, and it's also a beautiful spot for family photos.

You could even visit Baker Park and Bowness Park on the same day.

Prince's Island Park is an easy downtown family outing.

Walk along the pathways, watch the ducks, cross the bridges, or simply find somewhere to sit while the kids enjoy the open space.

It's also easy to combine with another downtown activity if you want to turn it into a longer family day.

Prairie Winds Park is especially fun during the warmer months.

The splash park is one of our favourites when it's hot outside. We usually bring towels, water bottles and plenty of snacks and make a little afternoon of it.

Outside splash-pad season, there are still playgrounds and open spaces to enjoy.

For something that feels a little more like an outdoor adventure, head to Nose Hill Park.

There are plenty of pathways to explore, open spaces and beautiful views over Calgary.

You don't have to turn it into a big hike either. Pick a section that works for your family and enjoy being outside.

Confederation Park is another easy option for a family walk or picnic.

There are pathways, green spaces and plenty of room for kids to explore.

It's especially nice when you want somewhere outdoors without needing to plan a full-day adventure.

Fish Creek is huge, which means you can visit multiple times and have a completely different experience.

Walk or bike the pathways, look for wildlife, find a picnic spot or simply explore a section you've never visited before.

It's one of my favourite examples of how much nature we have right inside the city.

Edworthy Park is another good choice when you want a relaxed outdoor family day.

Pack a picnic, explore the pathways, enjoy the river views, and let the kids spend some time outside.

This is probably one of the easiest ideas on the entire list.

Sometimes we simply go to a playground in our neighbourhood, and guess what? That's already a full outing for us. 😂

You could make it more interesting by choosing a playground in a community you've never visited before.

Bring snacks, let the kids play, and call it a family adventure.

Simple really can be best.

Because Calgary weather doesn't always cooperate. 😂

We visit our community library a lot.

Sometimes we're there to grab books, sometimes there's a program happening, and other times we just spend some time in the children's section.

It's easy, close to home, and doesn't require much planning.

Check your nearest Calgary Public Library location to see what children's activities and programs are available.

If you want to turn a library visit into more of an outing, head downtown to the Central Library.

The building itself is worth exploring, and there are children's areas, books and spaces where families can spend some time without feeling rushed.

You can easily pair this with a walk downtown or another nearby free activity.

When you want some greenery without being outside, Devonian Gardens is an easy downtown option.

Walk through the indoor gardens, look at the plants and ponds, and take a break from Calgary's weather. It's especially handy during colder or rainy days.

Some stores and community organizations offer free children's workshops throughout the year.

Rather than relying on one specific program always being available, check what's currently being offered when you're planning your outing.

These can be a fun way for kids to make something while trying a new activity.

This is one of my favourite ways to find something different to do without spending much.

Calgary has community celebrations, cultural festivals, markets and seasonal events throughout the year, and many offer free admission or free activities.

We've attended several over the years, and they can be such an easy way to experience something new as a family.

Because events and admission policies can change, I always recommend checking the organizer's current information before heading out.

We've attended family-friendly events at Spruce Meadows and always enjoy visiting.

Different events happen throughout the year, and some may offer free admission or activities.

Instead of relying on one particular event, check the current Spruce Meadows calendar to see what's happening when you're planning your visit.

Sometimes you just want to get out of the city.

These outings can be free once you're there, although of course you'll still want to factor in gas, parking requirements where applicable, and anything else you choose to buy along the way.

Elbow Falls is one of my favourite easy scenic outings near Calgary.

You don't need a long hike to enjoy the views, which makes it an easy option when you want to get into the mountains without committing to a full hiking day.

Bring a picnic and take your time enjoying the area.

The Big Rock is such a fun Alberta roadside stop.

It's easy to visit, doesn't require a huge time commitment, and gives you a chance to teach the kids a little about how this enormous rock ended up sitting in the middle of the prairie.

We've visited as a family, and it's one of those simple Alberta adventures that's worth experiencing at least once.

Cochrane Ranche is another option for an easy family outing outside Calgary.

Take a walk, explore the trails, and enjoy the scenery without needing an elaborate itinerary.

You can also combine it with some time exploring Cochrane.

And yes, an ice cream stop afterwards is always an option. 😂

For another short drive, head to Airdrie and spend some time at Nose Creek Regional Park.

There are pathways, open spaces, and plenty of room for a simple family walk or picnic.

It's an easy way to make an ordinary park day feel a little more like an adventure simply because you've gone somewhere different.

Write a few free activities on pieces of paper, put them in a jar and let the kids pick one.

It could be:

• Library
• New playground
• Family walk
• Picnic
• Bike ride
• Splash park
• Nature scavenger hunt

You don't even need a specific destination.

Sometimes giving the kids a little ownership over what you're doing makes the simplest outing feel much more exciting.

These are some of the free activities and places we've enjoyed with the kids around Calgary.

Some are proper day outings, while others are as simple as going to the library or discovering a new playground.

And honestly, some of those simple outings have given us the sweetest memories.

So if you're trying to spend less, looking for something easy to do this weekend, or simply want to get everyone out of the house, save this list and come back whenever you need an idea.
