Fall in Calgary may be short, but when the leaves start changing, some of our favourite parks and pathways around the city completely transform. The golden leaves, cooler weather, and colourful pathways make it such a beautiful time to get outside as a family.
And the best part? You don’t necessarily need a big hike or a drive to the mountains to enjoy it.

Bowness Park is already one of our favourite places for an easy family outing in Calgary, but it is especially beautiful when the leaves start changing.
There are plenty of trees throughout the park, walking paths to explore, and lots of space for the kids to run around. You can make your visit as simple as a short walk or turn it into a longer afternoon with a picnic and some playground time.
I also love that this is one of those places where you don't really need an itinerary. Park, walk around, enjoy the colours, and see where the day takes you.

Good to know: Fall weekends can get busy, especially when the weather is nice, so going earlier in the day can make parking easier.

There are pathways, wooded areas, river views, and plenty of places where you can simply wander and enjoy the season.
This is a good option for families who want more of a nature walk without having to drive all the way to the mountains.
And because there are so many different areas to explore, you can come back more than once and have a completely different outing.
Why it’s great with kids: Lots of trail options, nature to explore and plenty of room for a longer family adventure.
Good to know: Decide which part of Fish Creek you want to explore before leaving home because the park is very large.
If you want fall colours with a little bit of downtown Calgary in the background, Prince’s Island Park is a great choice.

- Prince’s Island Park if you want fall colours mixed with river and city views.
And my biggest tip would be to go when the light is softer, especially later in the afternoon, rather than when the sun is directly overhead.

One thing I’ve learned about fall outings in Calgary is that it helps to be prepared for pretty much anything.
Dress everyone in layers because a warm afternoon can quickly turn chilly. Comfortable shoes are also a good idea, especially if you plan to explore some of the longer pathways.
I usually bring snacks and water too because somehow kids become hungry approximately five minutes after leaving the house. 😂
And don't forget that fallen leaves can sometimes make pathways slippery, particularly after rain.
Most importantly, enjoy the colours while they're here. Calgary's fall season never seems to last quite long enough.
